Chippewa Tribe of Minnesota plans fishing rights protest
Members of the Chippewa Tribe of Minnesota will hold a fishing protest on May 14 to assert their rights under an 1854 treaty.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 1999 ruled that the treaty preserved fishing, hunting and gathering rights on ceded lands. "What we are talking about doing is have a demonstration of solidarity,'' Leech Lake tribal attorney Frank Bibeau told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The protest will occur prior to the state's opening of the walleye and northern pike seasons.
