Michigan paper takes credit for breaking Abramoff story
The Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun of Michigan is taking credit for publishing the first stories on the Jack Abramoff scandal.

The paper looked into the issue when members of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe complained about high fees for Abramoff and his associates. Around the same time, a Louisiana paper started looking at Abramoff's dealings with the Coushatta Tribe.

The Morning Sun ended up being kicked of the Saginaw Chippewa Reservation. Tribal employees were barred from speaking to the paper.

The story eventually boiled into a national scandal when The Washington Post got on the beat. That led Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) to call hearings on the matter.
