Federal prosecutors declined 47 percent of Indian Country cases in fiscal year 2009, the Department of Justice said.
Of those cases, about 12 percent were declined due to lack of federal jurisdiction or because no felony was committed, a spokesperson said. The reasons for the remainder were not disclosed.
The Obama administration supports a bill that would require federal prosecutors to provide regular data about the cases they decline.
The Tribal Law and Order Act has yet to pass the Senate or the House, however.
