The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is removing three council members from office after they pleaded guilty to federal crimes.
Vice Chairman Randy Shields, Treasurer Norman Thompson Sr., and Secretary Thomas Thompson Sr., admitted guilt in a bribery, corruption and retaliation scheme. A fourth person, Archie B. Baumann, pleaded guilty to bribing tribal leaders.
Chairman Brandon Sazue, who was the victim of retaliation in the case, said the tribe was glad the men were brought to justice. At one point, he had been removed from the tribal council by the other three.
“At one, time people used to talk about a black cloud hanging over Crow Creek. … The light is shining through,” Sazue told The Rapid City Journal.
The tribe is meeting today to discuss how to fill the empty seats. The next election is scheduled for April 15.
