Bill Lawrence, a member of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota who founded the landmark Native American Press/Ojibwe News died on Tuesday. He was 70.

Lawrence began the Ojibwe News in 1988 in response to tribal government corruption. His work helped federal prosecutors go after tribal leaders and other politicians.

Lawrence shut down his paper last fall after entering care for late-stage cancer. He died at a Veterans Affairs facility in Idaho. He served in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam.
