A federal jury ordered Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Indians in Minnesota, to pay $1.5 million for sharing 24 songs on the Internet.
Thomas-Rasset has been tried three times for illegally sharing music online. She plans to appeal the verdict, which her attorney characterized as too high.
"The punitive damages have to have some bearing to the actual damages," Kiwi Camara told The Wall Street Journal.
Most people who have been accused of sharing music settled their cases after pleading guilty. Thomas-Rasset, who works for her tribe, has continued to maintain her innocence.
