PINE RIDGE, SOUTH DAKOTA –– Incumbent President Theresa Two Bulls and five-time former President John Yellow Bird Steele are the unofficial winners in the Primary Election. Two Bulls garnered 771 votes to Steele’s 528.
For the office of vice president, Thomas Poor Bear with 809 votes edged out Myron Pourier with 706 votes.
Francis Pumpkin Seed, Chairman of the Election Commission said late last night, “The Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Primary Election was a tremendous success. We used electronic voting for the first time and the voters proved they could adapt.” He added that the turnout on the reservation was between 50 to 60 percent.
Sedrick Young Bear called the contract crew of David McEwen and Randall Forest of Automated Election Services of Rio Rancho, N.M. “a bottleneck that has to change.”
He said, “It went well in the districts but these guys are a bottleneck. They’re going to have to fix that for the General Election because they only had two guys here and they should have had 4 to 5 people.”
Native Sun News’ Randall Howell was at election headquarters until after midnight tallying the results of the election and sending them to the main office in Rapid City.
