Ho-Chunk Nation to establish law enforcement agency this year
The Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin is starting its own law enforcement agency.

The tribe hopes to hire a police chief sometime next month. The chief will oversee law enforcement for all of the tribe's trust lands.

"This has to do with our sovereignty. It's something we needed to have," Carson Funmaker, the chairman of the Ho-Chunk Nation Law Enforcement Commission, told The Jackson County Chronicle.

The tribe already has with six counties that provide law enforcement to its lands. Funmaker said those relationships will continue.

Wisconsin is a Public Law 280 state.
