One of the main figures in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal has managed to avoid prison time despite pleading guilty to stealing millions of dollars from tribes.
Michael Scanlon pleaded guilty in November 2005. He agreed to pay $19.7 million in restitution to tribes that were victimized in the scandal.
But he was never sentenced to prison like Abramoff, who was recently transferred to a halfway house to complete the final six months of his punishment. And it's never been reported if Scanlon repaid the tribes he cheated.
Scanlon has cooperated with federal prosecutors as they went after other figures in the scandal. He is now due to be sentenced on October 14, Politico reported.
