The National Congress of American
Indians and the United South and Eastern Tribes are hosting a land-into-trust summit in Washington, D.C., on July 13.
Tribal leaders will discuss the U.S. Supreme Court
decision in Carcieri
v. Salazar. The ruling restricts the land-into-trust process to tribes that were "under federal jurisdiction" in 1934.
A bill to fix the decision by ensuring that all tribes, regardless of the date of federal recognition, can follow the process has stalled in Congress.
The Obama administration plans to draft regulations to address the issue internally.
The summit will take place at the Senate Indian Affairs Committee Room 628 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
