Alaska Native leaders are meeting with Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk, the leader of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, in Fairbanks today.
The tribes plan to discuss sovereignty, subsistence and the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act during the meeting.
They hope the Obama administration will be more receptive to their concerns.
The meeting appears to be Echo Hawk's first to Alaska though he addressed the Alaska Federation of Natives via video last year.
