The Choctaw Nation is prepared to take action if the Oklahoma Water Resources Board votes to transfer control of a lake within tribal territory to Oklahoma City.
"We prefer to mitigate rather than litigate, but we have a legal team in place if necessary,” spokesperson Judy Allen told The Oklahoman.
The U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers built Sardis
Lake in Choctaw territory. The state was supposed to pay for construction
costs and take ownership of the lake but a dispute over payments led to a federal court
lawsuit.
A settlement requires the state to continue making payments on the lake. The tribe has offered to pay off the $27 million debt. The Chickasaw Nation has offered to chip in.
