The Canadian government has suspended law enforcement funding to the Blood Tribe of Alberta.
The tribal police commission hired Allen Eli-Wolf Tail as chief of the Blood Tribe Police Service. Canadian officials objected because he was suspended last year after being charged with assault.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police sent in a commanding officer to serve as police chief until a replacement is hired. Canada provides 51 percent of the funding for the tribe's police department. Alberta provides the rest.
