Phillip Martin, the former longtime chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, is in critical condition at a hospital, The Neshoba Democrat reported.
Martin, 83, was admitted to the hospital on Monday. His family hasn't released information about his status.
Martin, who served as chief for 32 years, rose to national prominence after bringing his tribe out of poverty. He came under scrutiny for his ties to corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff and lost his bid for re-election in 2007.
