The owner of a convenience store has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Geraldine Beardy, who was from the Garden Hill First Nation in Manitoba.
Authorities say Beardy was attacked in the store after she allegedly tried to shoplift a $1.49 can of lunch meat on September 13, 2009. She lapsed into a coma and died on September 18, 2009.
The owner, identified by CTV as Kwang Soo Kim, was initially charged with assault. Authorities haven't released details about the incident but family members believe he struck Beardy with a baseball bat, CBC News reported.
