Aloysius Dreaming Bear, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, has filed a lawsuit against a public school district in South Dakota because he won't be allowed to wear traditional clothing during graduation ceremonies.
Dreaming Bear, a senior at Oelrichs High School, says his civil rights are being violated. A federal judge is due to hear the case on Monday.
“ … how can I be a honorable Lakota warrior by wearing a white man’s gown, and not my tribe’s regalia?” Dreaming Bear wrote in a letter to the Oelrich School District, The Rapid City Journal reported.
The school district board voted 23-3 against Dreaming Bear's request.
