The First Nations University of Canada has begun staff layoffs after losing federal funding and faculty cuts are expected soon.
Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl cut $7 million to the school in the wake of financial and management concerns. The Saskatchewan government also cut funding but reversed after the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations implemented reforms.
The provincial funding might not be enough to keep the university afloat. "Faculty layoffs are coming,” Dr. Jesse Archibald-Barber told The Globe and Mail. “That’s what we’ve been told to expect. That puts us all in limbo. We’ve been backed into a corner.”
FNUC is based in Regina.
