A Colorado lawmaker will withdraw a bill that would have required schools with Indian mascots to gain state approval.
Sen. Suzanne Williams (D) is Comanche and the only American Indian in the Colorado Legislature. She said she achieved her goal of generating discussion about the issue.
"I introduced this bill because I feel very strongly that we need a conversation about the subtle discrimination between races and cultures," Williams told The Denver Post.
One mascot that has been controversial is the Eaton High School Reds. The mascot features a large-nosed Indian in a loincloth and leather pants.
