Former Indian center director seeks to avoid time in jail
Edward Smiley, the former director of the Farmington Indian Center in Farmington, New Mexico, has asked to enter a pre-prosecution diversion program on charges that he stole more than $30,000 from the city.

If accepted into the program, Smiley will have to pay one-half of restitution up front. He would not have to serve time in prison.

Smiley admitted he stole money from the center, which he ran for 11 years.
