New leaders of the Prairie Island Indian Community of Minnesota said they will continue to make nuclear waste management a top priority.
The reservation sits next to the Prairie Island nuclear plant. The tribe wants the waste moved to a safe location.
"Our continued battle to get nuclear waste removed from Prairie Island and to preserve our community's culture and heritage will be our top priority," said President Victoria Winfrey, The Redwing Republican-Eagle reported.
The tribe supports the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada but the Obama administration has eliminated funding for it. Tribes in Nevada and politicians in Nevada oppose the site.
