The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear Harjo
v. Pro-Football , the case over the Washington Redskins trademarks.
Indian activists, led by Suzan Shown Harjo, are challenging the federal approval
of the trademarks used by the Washington Redskins. They say
the marks are offensive to Native Americans.
The plaintiffs won their case before the United States Patent and Trademark
Office. But the team took the case to the federal courts, which have ruled
that the activists waited too long to challenge the marks.
"Obviously, we're quite pleased; it's been a long road," attorney Robert Raskopf told The Washington Post. "We're not surprised the court didn't see any issue worthy of review."
A second group of younger Indian activists continues to challenge the trademarks.
