North Dakota's American Indian population has grown by 13.4 percent since 2000, the North Dakota State Data Center reported.
American Indians make up 5.56 percent of the state population That comes to 35,666 people, according to the center.
American Indians are the largest racial/ethnic minority in the state. White Americans make up 91.39 percent of the population.
North Dakota is home to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation, the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Oyate, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.
