A Native man who said he left a gang to provide a better life for his daughter was killed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Wednesday.

Ken Catcheway, 34, worked Ogijiita Pimatiswin Kinamatwin, a construction program that trains former Native gang members. He was stabbed while doing renovations at a home in Winnipeg that is owned by the Dakota Ojibway First Nations Housing Authority.

Witnesses said Catcheway collapsed on the street while looking for help after he was stabbed. A CBC News camera crew found the alleged murder weapon nearby.

Catcheway told CBC News and The Winnipeg Sun earlier this year that he joined the construction program for his daughter, Chastity. "I'd choose this any day," Catcheway told the Sun. "This is more helpful to me. I got a little girl. I'm trying to be a family guy."
