San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico hailed the start of a project that will remove radioactive waste from a traditional hunting and gathering area.
Los Alamos National Laboratory stored the waste in large domes in a place known an Area G. Tribal members were kept in the dark about the purpose of the domes until recently.
"Once we found out there was radioactive stuff in there, we got scared,” Leon Roybal told The Albuquerque Journal. "We hunt out here. We plant out here and get our water from here."
Cleanup will last until 2015.
