Non-Indians who lease land from the Colorado River Indian Tribes are subject to tribal court jurisdiction, a federal judge ruled.
The Water Wheel Camp Recreation Area entered into a "consensual relationship" with the tribe, Judge David Campbell said. That satisfies a key test laid out by the U.S. Supreme Court in a tribal court jurisdiction case.
The tribe says it will continue eviction proceedings against Water Wheel. But the group claims that the court failed to determine whether the land in question is part of the reservation.
