The Chippewa Cree Tribe and the Fort Peck Tribes, both of Montana, each received about $12 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Chippewa Cree Tribe plans a 8,000-square-foot facility that will house up to 34 adults and juveniles, along with a tribal police headquarters. The Fort Peck Tribes will build a jail that will hold up to 98 people.

"It couldn't have come at a better time," Neil Rosette, an executive administrative officer with the Chippewa Cree Tribe, told The Great Falls Tribune. "Our current facility is deteriorating rapidly. It's a shot in the arm for our corrections."

The Department of Justice announced the grants on Monday.
