The Department of Justice is hosting a working session on crime and law enforcement in Indian Country in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden and Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli will meet with tribes today and tomorrow in preparation for the upcoming Tribal Nations Listening Conference. Attorney General Eric Holder will lead the conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on October 28-29.
DOJ reports show that American Indians and Alaska Natives are the victims of crime at rates far higher than any group in the nation. Tribal leaders complain of inadequate law enforcement funding and jurisdictional gaps that allow certain crimes to go unpunished.
The first working session was held August 25-26 in Seattle, Washington.
