Companies that want to do business in Alaska need to consult with Native villages and respect Native culture, speakers at the Alaska Oil & Gas Congress said.

Jerry Isaac of the Tanana Chiefs Conference, Margie Brown of Cook Inlet Region Inc. and Marie Greene of NANA Regional Corp. sat on a panel titled "Understanding the Most Effective and Respectful Methods to Engage, Partner and Consult with Alaskan Natives—What Industry Needs to Know." They offered advice on dealing with Native villages and Native corporations.

Isaac, the president of TCC, said companies shouldn't schedule meetings during subsistence harvests or funerals. He said the industry needs to offer more than jobs and small contracts in Native villages.
