HUD awards $7M to tribal and Native colleges
The Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $7 million to tribal, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian tribal colleges and universities.

Five tribal colleges in Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota received nearly $4 million to build, expand, renovate, and equip their own facilities. Money came from the Tribal Colleges and Universities Program.

"HUD is proud to stand with tribal colleges and universities as they strive to build, expand and renovate their campus facilities to more effectively address Native American educational and cultural needs," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "These grants will help these institutions of higher education meet their infrastructure needs so they can concentrate on the important work of building young minds."

Another four colleges serving Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians received $3 million to help revitalize neighborhoods, promote affordable housing and stimulate economic development. Money came from the Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) Program.

"Today we make an important investment to improve the economic health of Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities," said Donovan. "Beyond the tremendous influence these colleges and universities have in molding young minds, they can also be a powerful force for community and economic revitalization."
