Over 1,000 people attended the funeral of Donald
Marshall Jr., a Mi'kmaq activist who died on August 6 at the age of 55.
Marshall was at the center of two high profile Native rights disputes in Canada. He was hailed as a hero for standing his ground, after he was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1971 and later arrested for exercising his treaty rights.
"I feel so inspired, like so many others, inspired by a man who knew who he was, where he came from and for what he believed in," Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo said at the funeral, The Halifax Chronicle Herald reported.
Marshall was buried in Membertou, Nova Scotia, where the Membertou First Nation is based.
