Organizers of the Sacred Breath Pow Wow that was held in South Dakota over the weekend hope to steer Native people from non-traditional use of tobacco.
"In our culture, the use of tobacco is very sacred. But we also support tobacco-free legislation and don't promote the social use of tobacco," Stephanie Big Crow of the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health told The Rapid City Journal.
About 300 people attended the powwow, which took place at the Journey Museum. Honorees included Oglala Lakota College President Tom Short Bull.
"We need to do the right thing -- and in this 'here and now,' the right thing is not to smoke," Short Bull said, the Journal reported. OLC is a completely smoke-free campus.
