Singer Jessica Simpson is coming under fire online for using the derogatory phrase "Indian giver."
Simpson used the phrase when asked about a gift to a former boyfriend. "I'm not an Indian giver," she told TMZ.com.
Comments to the TMZ site indicated outrage with her remarks. "As a Native American, in particular a Dakota, I find those comments quite sad and stereotypical. But not surprising, if you look who said them," one person said.
Jacqueline L. Pata, the executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, said people often use the phrase without knowing its meaning.
