The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota is seeking to have 80 acres placed in trust.
The tribe plans to open a new headquarters and clinic on the land. A local official is already opposing the application.
"There are over $30,000 in taxes on this property," Scott County commissioner Barbara Marschall told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "But when people talk to me about trust applications, the bottom line is that it's all about the money. That's where my continued opposition stems from."
The county has opposed the tribe's applications for several years.
