The Pawnee Nation lives in Oklahoma now but the tribe is once again making its presence known in Nebraska.
The tribe recently acquired property in Nebraska, its first in the state since being forced to leave in the late 1800s. The tribe wants the land placed in trust though there are no plans for tribal members to live there.
"I don't know if I could handle the winter," Pat LeadingFox, the tribe's president of the chiefs council for cultural affairs, told The Omaha World-Herald.
But the tribe is reasserting itself in Nebraska in other ways. The tribe has a non-voting seat on the Nebraska Indian Affairs Commission, has started reburying its ancestors in Nebraska and has started regrowing Pawnee corn in Nebraska.
