Elwood Ott, a member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Oklahoma, will realize his dream today when he graduates from Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.
Ott started Haskell in 1999 but didn't finish his degree. He went back to work so his wife could attend Kansas University.
Ott finally got back to school and landed a coaching job for Haskell's basketball teams. He managed to complete his degree in American Indian Studies and he now plans to attend graduate school.
“I’m trying to show my kids the importance of it,” Ott told The Lawrence Journal-World. “I’m just trying to pave the way forward.”
