The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York will hold a referendum on June 6 to determine whether to develop its own power system.

The tribe plans to buy electricity on the open market and build a $13.7 million system to distribute energy on the reservation. The move will cut costs, tribal leaders say.

The deal requires the tribe to break an existing agreement with National Grid. A $4.3 million exit fee is required.
