The Winnemem Wintu Tribe filed suit against several federal agencies for losses to its traditional land in northern California.

The tribe was promised a reservation after the creation of the Shasta Dam in 1941. But the federal government never fulfilled its promise and the tribe lost 4,480 acres and suffered damage to sacred and cultural sites.

"There just comes a time when you can't lose any more of your things," Mark Franco, the tribe's head man, told The Sacramento Bee.

The lawsuit seeks damages for lost and damaged land. Defendants include the Bureau of Reclamation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Forest Service.
