The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara
Nation is moving forward with plans for a hospital on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.
The Fiscal
Year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act provides $17 million for the Elbowoods
Memorial Health Center. The facility will be constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and handed over to the Indian Health Service when it is completed in February 2011.
With previously appropriated funds, the Corps hired a firm to design the hospital. Construction is set to begin in late June.
The tribe's original hospital was destroyed during the creation of the Garrison Dam in the 1950s.
