The sixth annual memorial service for Lori Piestewa, a member of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona who was killed in Iraq, was held today in Phoenix.
The sunrise ceremony took place at Piestewa Peak. The state of Arizona renamed the mountain for Piestewa, who died on March 23, 2003, during the start of the war in Iraq.
Piestewa left behind two children. Her daughter, Carla Whiterock, sent the national anthem at the memorial. Her son, Brandon Whiterock, will sing "God Bless America," The Arizona Republic reported.
Piestewa was one of 11 soldiers killed in the March 2003 ambush.
