"Like other communities, the White Earth Reservation in north-central Minnesota is dependent on foreign oil, imports most of its food and wastes far too much energy, said Winona LaDuke.

So she decided to do something about it.

LaDuke built a wind turbine, helped plant 200 gardens, bought back former tribal lands and set up a food program that takes nutritious, locally grown foods to the local school.

“Our plan is to create this green economy that is relocalized,” the environmentalist, author and former vice presidential candidate said Wednesday.

“The odds are against us, but we’re just very determined.”

LaDuke took her message of sustainable energy, empowerment of local economies and Native environmentalism to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Wednesday."
