The plaintiffs in a discrimination lawsuit against the Department of Agriculture are calling on President Barack Obama to settle the 10-year-old case.
The Keepsagle case alleges systemic discrimination against Indian ranchers. They say they were unable to obtain loans and other assistance to keep their operations up and running.
“Credit is an essential tool of agriculture,” Claryca Mandan, a rancher from the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota, told The Fargo Forum. "That’s been denied to us for far too long.”
Mandan is in Washington, D.C., today for a press conference that will urge a settlement. A status hearing in court is scheduled for Friday.
