Gold miners filed a petition with the California Department of Fish and Game to halt a fishery for the Karuk Tribe.
The New 49ers are upset that the tribe linked their activities to a decline in salmon runs They say the tribe kills more salmon than mining.
The tribe had asked the state for emergency rules to stop recreational mining. The department said it might consider changes in the long term.
