Members of Rhode Island's U.S. Congressional delegation won't be introducing legislation to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court
decision in Carcieri
v. Salazar.
The court ruled that the land-into-trust provisions of the Indian
Reorganization Act only apply to tribes that were "under federal jurisdiction" in 1934.
Tribes want Congress to amend the law so that all tribes can benefit but the four members of the state's all-Democratic delegation -- even Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D), a co-founder of the House Native American Caucus -- aren't interested in helping out.
"The Supreme Court’s decision has the potential to affect tribes all over the country and right now the legal ramifications are still being determined. I am not submitting legislation to challenge the court ruling," Kennedy said in a statement to The Providence Journal.
Tribal leaders are meeting in Washington, D.C., this morning to discuss the case and efforts to "fix" the decision.
