The Shiprock Chapter of the Navajo Nation voted unanimously to oppose a proposed public school consolidation in New Mexico.
Due to declining enrollment and budget cuts, the Central Consolidated School District is seeking to move students from one elementary school to another. A second school would be shut down altogether.
The majority of students in the district are Navajo. "All your money comes from Indian children. Who put us in this deficit? Why are we, our Indian children, paying the penalty?" said Shiprock Council Delegate Leonard Anthony, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
The school board will vote on the proposal tomorrow.
