A senior at the University of Wyoming is studying the experiences of Indian students at predominantly non-Indian campuses.
Amanda LeClair, who is Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho, interviewed five fellow students and two faculty members for "Speaking Out: Experiences of Native American Students on a Predominately White Campus." She discovered that Indian students are often singled out by professors to talk about Indian issues.
"We're a very diverse culture," Angela Jaime, an educator professor who is LeClair's mentor on the project, told The Casper Star-Tribune. "To lump us all into one group...is inappropriate because they can't speak for everyone."
LeClair hopes her study will raise awareness among non-Indians. "I know my project is not going to solve every problem," she told the paper.
