The Blackfeet Nation of Montana is a step closer to approval of its water rights compact.
A Montana House committee approved the compact on Monday, sending it to the full House for a vote. The state Senate will also weigh in.
"It establishes one of the critical elements necessary for the development of a self-sustaining economy of the Blackfeet Reservation, and a permanent homeland for the Blackfeet people," testified vice chairman Roger Running Crane, The Great Falls Tribune reported.
The deal, which quantifies the tribe's water rights and authorizes a water project, will need to be approved by Congress.
