A bill to extend the policy of self-determination to Native Hawaiians was introduced in the House and Senate on Wednesday.
The bill would treat Native Hawaiians in a matter similar to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Supporters are hopeful for approval because President Barack Obama, who was born in Hawaii, backs recognition.
Republicans and some groups in Hawaii oppose the bill. They say it will create a "race-based" government.
The House version is H.R.862. The Senate version is S.381.
