The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will award an emergency grant to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to keep a youth suicide program running.

The tribe had applied for a $1.5 million grant for the Oniyapi Program. But the application was rejected even through there have been 51 suicide attempts on the reservation this year alone.

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, said SAMHSA agreed to provide the emergency funds during a conference call yesterday. The amount of the grant hasn't been announced.
