Former Interior secretary Gale Norton is the subject of a criminal corruption probe, The Los Angeles Times reports.
The Department of Justice has assigned prosecutors to investigate whether Norton used her position to benefit Royal Dutch Shell PLC. After she left federal service, she went to work for the company.
At issue are three oil shale leases awarded to a Shell subsidiary for land in Colorado. Norton is from Colorado and served as the state's attorney general.
According to the Times, Interior's Inspector General began the investigation and recently made a "formal criminal referral" to DOJ.
