A federal judge says jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff needs to start repaying his tribal victims for defrauding them out of millions of dollars.
As part of his plea deal, Abramoff agreed to pay restitution of $23 million to his former tribal clients. Judge Ellen Huvelle ordered his defense attorneys and the Department of Justice to come up with a plan to distribute his income tax refunds.
"A portion of it that is not trifling has to go to the victims," Huvelle said at a hearing yesterday, The National Law Journal reported.
Abramoff received a $520,000 tax refund this year and expects to receive another $200,000 for overpaid taxes.
